TORONTO - The Opposition Conservatives support the McGuinty government's plan to use a secure driver's licence instead of a passport for crossing the border.

But Conservative Frank Klees told the Ontario legislature he is concerned about privacy issues and the technology that allows people to access a driver's information.

Transportation Minister Jim Bradley introduced legislation yesterday that would also allow Ontario to develop a secure photo ID card for people who don't drive.

He says it will make travel across the border easier and lessen the congestion.

The province is working closely with the Canada Border Services Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to develop the program.

And negotiations are continuing between Ottawa and Washington over the proposal to use enhanced licences.

As of next June, all travellers to the U.S. will have to present either a passport or an acceptable alternative.
