Three men face assault charges after a fight at a Sikh temple in Brampton sent four men to hospital Sunday.

Peel police were already at the Sri Guru Nanak temple at 99 Glidden Rd., when the fight broke out. They had arrived just after 2 p.m. Sunday to attempt to keep the peace over what they say is an ongoing dispute within the Sikh community.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., a fight broke out at the temple, where police say several hundred people were gathered. Weapons were used during the brawl.

Four men ranging in age from 33 to 46 were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. All four have since been released from hospital.

Three men have been charged in relation to the fight, and police say more charges are possible.

Harvinder Pal Dhaliwal, 41, of Brampton has been charged with assault. He has been released from police custody and is to appear in court May 20.

Tehal Shergill, 60, and Satwant Deol, 25, both from Brampton, have both been charged with assault with a weapon. Shergill has also been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of assault causing bodily harm. Deol faces an additional charge of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Both men remain in police custody pending bail hearings.

Sunday's incident follows the non-fatal stabbing of prominent Sikh lawyer Manjit Mangat, who was stabbed with a kirpan about two weeks ago outside the Sikh Lehar Centre, located on Bramsteele Road about a kilometre from Sri Guru Nanak.

Police are asking for anyone who witnessed or has information about Sunday's incident to contact them at 905-453-2121 ext. 2133.
