CHATHAM, Ont. -- Provincial police are asking people to think before they post video or pictures from accident scenes on social media.
Officers at the scene of a fatal six-vehicle crash late last month on Highway 401 at Chatham, Ont., reported seeing motorists using their cellphones to take pictures and video.
They say one person even told them he was live-streaming the collision scene where two passengers in a pickup truck had died.
OPP say this was being done before officers were able to confirm who was in the vehicle and notify the next of kin, adding that "death notification by social media is not right."
Const. Jay Denorer says OPP know of no next of kin who learned of a relative's death due to social media postings from the crash site in this incident.
Police say drivers using cellphones to take photos at collision scenes can be charged with distracted driving.
