A tentative settlement has been reached to end the York Region Viva bus strike, exactly three months after the strike began.

The settlement was reached on Tuesday evening between Local 113 of the Amalgamated Transit Union and Veolia Transportation, which operates the Viva bus service under contract to York Region Transit.

The settlement is subject to secret ballot ratification by the 220 members of Local 113 who work for Viva.

Details of the tentative settlement will not be disclosed until the ratification vote is held.

If the settlement is ratified, Viva bus services will resume in accordance with a schedule determined by Veolia.

Bus drivers and mechanics represented by three unions walked off the job on Oct. 24, shutting down service to 60 per cent of the region and stranding some 44,000 commuters.

A contract with a third company, First Canada, was terminated last week and the region is expected to choose its replacement later this week.

A membership meeting to discuss the settlement will be held on Thursday morning. The settlement is not tied to negotiations between ATU Local 1587 and Miller Transit and First Student.
