Toronto police are canvassing a neighbourhood in the city's west end for witnesses, after a 15-year-old was shot in the face and killed early Monday morning.

The teen was found outside an apartment above DJ Records and Clothing on Eglinton Ave. W, near Keele Street., at around 2 a.m.

The victim answered a knock at the door and was shot. He was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where he was pronounced dead, said EMS officials.

Police say they're not sure if anyone else was home at the time of the shooting.

Friends identified the dead teen as Devante, who was known on the street as Bugzee. Friends told CTV Toronto that Devante was spending the night with his girlfriend in an apartment above the store.

The teen had reportedly been in trouble with the law before.

Investigators say they have "good direction" in the case and will be looking at footage from security cameras installed in the vicinity for a closer look at a possible suspect.

This isn't the first violent incident in the area. In September 2008, 18-year-old Stephen Burton, nicknamed "Frost" was shot to death at a nearby bus stop. The next day, 29-year-old Dayne Rrose, who lived across the street from Burton, was murdered and dropped on Highway 401.

Both incidents happened just steps away from last night's murder.

Police blamed much of the violence on a turf war among four local gangs, most prominently the Five Point Generals and the Gators.

Last summer, extra officers from the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) were sent to patrol the neighbourhood.

Several alleged members of the Five Point Generals were arrested earlier this month during Project Corral, a major police roundup of suspected gang members.

The teen is the city's 16th homicide victim of 2010.
