A 17-year-old boy has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries following a stabbing inside Thistletown Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke.

The incident happened shortly after 1 p.m. following an altercation in the cafeteria of the high school, located near Islington Avenue and Pakenham Drive.

Paramedics said the victim sustained a single wound to his torso. He was rushed to a trauma centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the teen was located by a school resource officer.

TDSB spokesperson Shari Schwartz-Maltz told CTV News Toronto that the officer who happened to be at the high school was able to help with the situation.

“We do have a school resource officer who’s almost permanently at the school and one of them was actually here today,” Schwartz-Maltz said. “That’s a Toronto police officer that works in the school and she was very instrumental because she happened to be on scene.”

Family members of the victim rushed to the scene after hearing about the stabbing.

A cousin of the victim said “I just heard that he got stabbed… that’s all I know now. He is with his mother now (at the hospital).”

Schwartz-Maltz said that many students at the school were upset.

“I did see some kids in the office and they were upset,” she said. “They are friends of the victim, but they will have all the resources they need, they have them today, they have them right now and they’ll have them tomorrow.”

The high school has a permanent social worker at the school every day but they will be bringing in a larger team tomorrow to help students and teachers cope with this incident.

The Toronto District School Board placed the school under lockdown until about 3 p.m. as a result of the stabbing.

Police said one suspect, described as a 15-year-old male, is in custody in relation to the incident but they have not confirmed if that person is a student at the high school.
