A 16-year-old boy is dead after a shooting in a west-end apartment building late Sunday night.

The shooting happened inside one of the units on the 19th floor of an apartment building on Weston Road near Lawrence Avenue just before midnight.

Yusuf Tifow, who turned 16 last month, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Family and friends who knew Tifow said he was a good boy who helped others.

"He always say hi to you when you're coming in and when you have groceries, helping you. He's very such, such a wonderful boy," family friend Farhiya Warsame told CTV Toronto.

On his online profiles, Tifow posted pictures and messages about gang culture but police say they did not know Tifow until he died.

"He was just a young boy, 16 years old, maybe with the wrong crowd, I’m not sure. But he was a healthy, beautiful boy," cousin Khadija Shire said.

Since the beginning of this year, seven boys have been shot dead in Toronto. All of them were 15 or 16 years old.

Tifow lived with his mother and four brothers.

Police say they will release a surveillance image of a male suspect Monday night or Tuesday morning.

"I want to confirm that I have the right person before I release that image or even give a description at this point in time," Det. Sgt. Peter Trimble told CP24 Monday morning.

An autopsy has been scheduled.
