The 16-year-old boy suspected in a double murder in Scarborough fought off and shot dead two home intruders, police say.

The boy was sleeping inside the house on Rylander Boulevard when the two men tried to break in at about 4 a.m. on Wednesday, The Globe and Mail reports.

"A struggle ensues, he is armed with a gun, he shoots one, he chases the other one out of the house and shoots him," Staff Insp. Brian Raybould told the newspaper.

Officers found 34-year-old Shawn Day bleeding inside the house and discovered 43-year-old Clifford Charles slumped inside a black pickup truck that had jumped the curb and smashed into a nearby tree.

Both men, who are from Toronto, suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest, police said. They died in hospital.

A source close to the investigation told The Globe the homicides were drug related and that the residence was a crack house.

Police are still hunting for the suspect who has no history of run-ins with the law or gang activity, Raybould said.

The teen is being urged to contact a lawyer and surrender to police.

Police have received court permission to temporarily identify the suspect.

The victims are the city's 37th and 38th murders of the year.
