An Ajax, Ont., high school teacher accused of slashing his wife's throat during a Caribbean vacation has been released on bail from a Jamaica prison.

The Jamaica Gleaner reported on Wednesday that 43-year-old Paul Martin was granted bail on strict conditions and a surety equal to about CDN$5,500.

Martin is accused of slashing his wife's throat and blaming the near-fatal attack on a carjacker.

Cathy-Lee Martin, a 34-year-old bank manager, suffered serious injuries when she was attacked in an isolated area near the resort city of Montego Bay.

Her injuries were inflicted the day the couple, which has two kids aged five and two, was scheduled to leave Jamaica. The Martins reportedly travelled to the Caribbean nation to mend their strained relationship.

Paul Martin, a teacher at St. Francis de Sales Catholic School in Ajax, allegedly told his wife he was taking her on a sightseeing tour before heading to the airport but drove the van into a secluded area.

According to the Gleaner, Justice Donald McIntosh granted Martin bail on the condition that he not appear within 200 yards (183 metres) of his wife and report to the police every other day.

He must reside in St. James, a suburban area of Jamaica, and surrender all travel documents to Jamaican authorities.

Martin is to return to court on June 15.
