The Toronto District School Board has passed a balanced budget after hours of tense negotiations.

School trustees voted late Monday night in favour of a $2.5 billion-budget for the 2009/2010 school year. Part of the budget focuses on providing support to students who need the extra help.

"We are committed to maintaining and supporting excellent learning environments that lead to success for all our students while maintaining fiscal responsibility," said TDSB's Director of Education Gerry Connelly in a news release. "By realigning resources and staff within the budget, the current plan will allow us to fulfill that commitment, and to better support the needs of all students across the system."

As part of the budget, the board voted to spend $165,000 on hiring additional arts teachers. In an effort to balance the budget, trustees agreed to move $37 million from a facility renewal grant.

The budget also noted that the board is set to receive about $250,000 from visitor parking fees.
