Toronto counted its 80th murder of the year Sunday morning after a 16-year-old boy was shot to death in north Scarborough.

The victim's mother discovered her son suffering from obvious trauma in the front hallway of their townhouse, police said.

"He was standing out front of his house. He had some friends over and they were playing video games," explained Insp. Hank Idsinga, of the Toronto Police Homicide Squad. "He stepped outside to start his car for his mother who was going to drive one of his friends home and he took some bullets."

Keyon Campbell was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police are canvassing the townhouse complex, located in the Finch and Morningside Avenues area on Empringham Drive, to look for witnesses.

They are also clearing the snow, looking for evidence that might have been covered by Sunday's storm.

Investigators say Campbell was known to police but insist he did not have a criminal record. They described him as a bright student and avid basketball player who held down a part-time job.

Residents living in the Malvern neighbourhood said unfortunately, violence in their community doesn't surprise them anymore.

"It's really hard to live here," Chevon Wesley told CTV Toronto. "Violence is getting more serious more than anything else."

Another resident said she found the fact that the victim was just a kid hard to take.

"They're all kids... they're just all kids... they just play together... It's ridiculous."

Police say they have some leads in the case but are not prepared to name suspects.

They are asking anyone with information to come forward anonymously by leaving a tip with Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS or by calling homicide detectives directly at 416-808-7400.
