Homicide detectives are looking for a gunman after a 22-year-old man was shot several times while riding his bicycle in Rexdale late last night.

Tevane Sean Lennon was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead en route. He is Toronto's 36th murder victim of the year.

Residents who heard the shooting called police to Sultan Pool Drive and Bagwell Court, a residential neighbourhood in the Finch Avenue and Martin Grove Road area, at around 11 p.m.

A bicycle and baseball cap, both belongings of the victim, laid on the ground as detectives collected evidence for their investigation.

Lennon, the father of a three-year-old daughter, lived on Bagwell Court. Police say he was on his way home from the corner store with milk and groceries when he was confronted.

Police told CTV News that Lennon was not being chased at the time of the shooting. An officer at 23 Division where the incident occurred said that there have been at least four shootings in the immediate area in the past week and a half.

However, the officer said it is too early in the investigation to say if the murder is related to the other shootings or to gang activity.

Lennon had been in trouble with the law before but his stepfather Carl Smith said he had turned his life around since his daughter was born.

"He was a good kid, a very good kid, the only kid his mother had," he said.

Investigators are looking for a black car with tinted windows that was seen in the area at the time of the shooting. They are also looking for one male suspect who was wearing black clothes and a black fitted baseball cap.
