Toronto officials promise the city will be cleared of dumped garbage by the end of Sunday but there's also good news ahead for those waiting for curbside pickup.

The city says it will collect an unlimited amount of waste for the next two collection cycles after Torontonians were left without garbage pickup for 39 days during a civic strike.

Recycling, garbage and green bin pickup starts Tuesday and residents are being told to follow the collection schedule that the city put out earlier this year to determine which type of waste they should put out.

In the meantime, waste trucks spent the weekend travelling across the city, cleaning up 25,000 tonnes of trash that has been dumped off at several temporary dump sites that were set up during the strike.

Residents were happy to see the mounds of garbage disappear, especially since they were dumped on neighbourhood parks. However, the thick stench of the rotting garbage still lingered in the air after the piles of bags were gone.

Other city services that were frozen during the municipal job action also resume this week.

City-run daycare centres will reopen on Tuesday. Children will also be able to enjoy splash pads that will be back up and running Tuesday as well.

The reopening of outdoor pools is expected to take a little bit longer as crews need to make sure that they are properly maintained.

Pools are expected to reopen between Wednesday, August 5 to Saturday, August 8.
