Two people are in hospital after a heated domestic dispute ended up in a serious accident on Highway 401 Sunday afternoon.

A male driver and a female passenger were ejected from the man's SUV after it hit the highway guardrail and rolled over several collector lanes near the McCowan Road exit. The two were not wearing their seatbelt at the time but both only suffered non life-threatening injuries, said Police Const. Victor Gomes with the Ontario Provincial Police.

No other cars were hit in the accident.

A domestic dispute, not speeding, is suspected as being behind the crash, he said. While the OPP is investigating the traffic collision, Toronto Police 41 Division is looking at how the fight ended up on the road.

Police told CTV News the couple were fighting at an apartment building near Victoria park and Highway 401. They continued their fight as they got into the car. Witnesses told police they saw things being thrown out of the car and saw the driver struggle with the passenger. They also said at one point, the SUV stopped suddenly in the live lane before continuing on its way.

Authorities are calling it a 'miracle' that no one else was injured in the accident.

"The highway was busy today," said Sgt. Elaine Allison from 41 Division. "They were very, very fortunate."

The accident shut down the right lane of the highway plus the McCowan exit for two hours. It was reopened soon after 2:30 p.m.
