A 30-year-old man is in police custody, charged with assault after a woman was randomly attacked with a knife at a Toronto subway station.
Toronto police arrested the suspect late Tuesday night with the help of TTC staff, Insp. Anil Anand of 52 Division told ctvtoronto.ca.
At the time of the attack, TTC staff told police they recognized the suspect as a frequent subway user.
TTC employees spotted the suspect on the transit system again last night and promptly called police. He was arrested without incident, Anand said.
Police say the attack appears to be completely unprovoked and that the suspect and the 57-year-old victim do not know each other.
The woman was treated in hospital for a minor head wound.
In the last several months, several violent incidents have been reported on the TTC, including a man who randomly pushed two teens onto the tracks. The teens managed to escape the oncoming train and survived the fall.
Anand said despite the random nature of this latest attack, he has complete confidence in the safety of the TTC.
"We have an incredibly safe transit system," he said. "We have these random acts and it appears like these acts happen a lot but they are extremely rare."
Edward Owase, a Toronto resident, has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and failure to comply with a recognizance.
Owase is scheduled to appear in a Toronto courtroom Wednesday morning.
Bloor/Dovercourt T.O. stabbing
Aa stabbing occurred at a Greek restaurant in the Bloor Street West and Dovercourt Road area on Wednesday afternoon.
The victim was reportedly stabbed in the neck.
Police arrested a suspect at the scene, and say there are no outstanding suspects.
