A suitcase containing human remains has been found in Lake Ontario, near the Bluffer’s Park Yacht Club in east Toronto, police said Wednesday.

Toronto police Det. Les Dunkley said the suitcase was discovered by boaters who found the suitcase about 2.5 km offshore at around 11:21 a.m. and towed it to shore.

The suitcase contains “a badly decomposed torso,” the sex of which cannot be determined, Dunkley said.

The finding comes as police continue their investigation into the death of Hua Guang Liu.

The single mother of three children went missing in August and some of her body parts were found in two parks in the Toronto area.

Chun Qi Jiang, Liu’s estranged boyfriend, has since been charged with second-degree murder.

Not all of Liu’s body parts have been found.

Dunkley said a coroner attended the scene and will conduct a post-mortem examination Thursday morning.

Police have been in touch with Peel Regional Police, which has taken the lead on the Liu murder investigation, Dunkley confirmed.

He couldn’t say whether this torso is linked to Liu.

“We’ve been in touch with Peel Regional Police and until we get results for the post-mortem, we can’t determine if it’s one and the same,” Dunkley said.

A spokesperson for Peel police, said that they are not aware of a link between this discovery and any other ongoing investigations.

The find follows days after a similar discovery of another woman’s torso at the base of Niagara Falls on Aug. 29.

A tourist riding the Maid of the Mist boat spotted the remains and alerted police.

The identity of that body has yet to be determined, though police said it belongs to a Caucasian female who has had two Cesarean sections and a tubal ligation procedure.
