Students at York University are calling for heightened security measures after two women were sexually assaulted while inside their dorm rooms.

Campus security has been doubled and a visible police presence can be seen at the university since the Friday-night attacks, but students say there could have been more preventive measures in place.

"They should have this monitored a little better," York student Nicole St. Pierre CTV News, referring to the residence entrances.

"We've all talked about it and there should have been cameras at the doors so that they should have been caught."

The university says there are currently cameras on campus, but none at dormitory entrances. University officials said the recent attacks have prompted discussion on installing visual surveillance in residences.

According to authorities, two men entered the Vanier College residence located on Keele Street near Steeles Avenue West in the early hours of Friday morning.

They sexually assaulted two 19-year-old women who were asleep in their unlocked dorm rooms, and attempted to attack a third female within the residence.

Both first-year students were treated in hospital and later released.

Police say the suspects were able to access six rooms in total within a five-hour span.

It's still unclear how the two men entered the residence. Students can only gain access to the dorm using a pass card for the outside entrance and then a separate swipe card for their rooms.

Female students say they are gripped by fear and are terrified the suspects could still be roaming the campus.

"It's very scary as a woman having to feel like someone could come into your building at anytime and get into your room," St. Pierre said.

York University, and the surrounding area, has been plagued by a number of sexual assaults in recent history, but this is the first that has occurred within a dormitory.

A woman was sexually assaulted in April while walking to her residence, and two women were raped in the same area of the city in 2006.
