Toronto police are launching a back-to-school traffic safety blitz today as students return to the classroom.

The ‘Are you FOCUSED on school” (Frequent Offences the Community and road Users See Every Day’ blitz will run from today until Friday.

During the blitz, police officers and parking enforcement officers will be on the lookout for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who commit offences in school zones.

As well, police will be targeting dangerous driving offences, prohibited turns and distracted driving.

“We are going to be looking at the no stopping and parking zones around the schools,” Const. Clint Stibbe told CP24 on Tuesday morning. “Traditionally we have had a lot of complaints from school personnel that vehicles are parking or even double parking round the school where they shouldn’t be and putting kids at risk. At the same time, speeding is also one of the biggest problems we see in the city on a daily basis and especially around school zones, so we will have officers doing speed enforcement as well.”

In a press release, police say their intent is to focus on “road-users who jeopardize the safety of the public through their poor decisions and behaviour.”

The blitz will officially get underway at 7 a.m. with a launch event at Second Street Junior Middle School in Etobicoke.
