Two suspects in a Toronto high school stabbing were allegedly after the victim's cell phone, police said Thursday.
Luke Thomas, 16, was stabbed just centimetres from his liver Thursday afternoon after two people accosted him at Eastern Commerce Collegiate. Police say the aggressors seem to have known what phone he had in advance of the attack.
The school was placed on lockdown while police investigated. Police now say they've received plenty of leads and it shouldn't be long before they identify the suspects.
"Some good information is coming forth from the school and the students there," Det. Sandy Broadfoot told CTV Toronto. "It's just a matter of time."
Principal Michael Ferguson said incidents like Thursday's stabbing make everyone at the school feel uneasy.
"There's always a sense a violation has taken place," he told CTV Toronto on Thursday.
Thomas has had surgery and is recovering at St. Michael's Hospital.
Family friend Pauline Padmore said everyone who knows Thomas is shocked that anyone would want to hurt him.
"When something like that happens, you think, 'That could almost have been it for him," she told CTV Toronto. "And all for something that sounds so trivial and just plain stupid."
