ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - A 37-year-old St. Catharines woman is accused of faking cancer and bilking a family out of thousands of dollars.

Police allege a woman falsely claimed she had cancer and duped a Norfolk County family out of $200,000 over three years.

Provincial police spokeswoman Kari Lee says a family member contacted authorities in January claiming they'd been victims of fraud.

Investigators say that between July 2007 and January 2011 the family met with a woman who claimed to have cancer and needed money for medical and personal costs.

Police say the investigation revealed that the woman does not have cancer.

Michelle Meller is charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000.
