York Regional Police are blaming speed for a fatal car crash on Keele Street south of the Lloydtown-Aurora road that left two people dead and a third hospitalized.

"What we have here is simply a high-speed collision," Const. Mike Buchanan told reporters at the crash scene.

The 1997 Volkswagen left the road, went into the ditch and hit a tree, he said.

Road conditions were good, as was the weather. The road has a posted speed limit of 70 kilometres per hour.

The single-vehicle crash occurred about 1:30 p.m. on Monday. A third person was trapped in the wreckage. Emergency workers worked for an hour to extract that victim, who was transported by air to St. Michael's hospital. His injuries aren't considered to be life-threatening.

All three are believed to between 19 and 20 years of age. The dead young men's bodies have been taken for autopsies.

York Police's collision reconstruction team called to the scene. As of 6 p.m., the crash scene was still closed.

"Anyone with information or who may have witnessed this collision is asked to call the York Regional Police Collision Reconstruction Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7703," police said.
