OPP have closed a segment of Highway 11 in both directions in South Muskoka due to unsafe driving conditions caused by weather.

In an initial social media post, OPP advised drivers about weather conditions creating unsafe roadways between Gravenhurst and Orillia, confirming that Highway 11 southbound has been closed between Doe Lake Road and Washago.

In a later update, OPP confirmed the closured of Highway 11 in the northbound direction between Doe Lake Road and Wasago.

The Bracebridge fire chief told CTV News that fire crews helped extract drivers from the roadway to transport them to Gravenhurst Town Hall for access to generators amid power outages.

Drivers have told CTV News via phone that some have been stranded on the highway for hours.

OPP stated that drivers should avoid Highway 11 and those areas until further notice.
