The province's Special Investigation Unit is investigating a shooting that happened in Peel region Sunday morning.

Peel police were investigating a report of a stolen SUV in the area of Bovaird Drive and Highway 10 at around 7:30 a.m..

They found the car outside a motel in Brampton.

Police knocked at the door of one of the motel rooms to ask some questions. A man inside the room ran away, police said.

Police chased the suspect on foot for about a half-kilometre. Police say gunshots were exchanged and the suspect was hit.

The man was rushed to Sunybrook hospital for emergency surgery.

The SIU, which steps in any time the police are involved in an incident where a civilian is killed or injured, is questioning five police officers who were at the scene at the time.
