The Special Investigations Unit is probing the circumstances behind a two-vehicle collision in downtown Hamilton, Ont., that left an 18-year-old woman with fatal injuries.

Around 8:17 p.m. on Saturday night, a Hamilton police officer was attempting to pull over a vehicle driving east on Wilson Street in the city's downtown core.

The driver did not stop for the officer and later collided with a van at the intersection of Wellington Street, less than one kilometre south of Hamilton General Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle and his passenger, 18-year-old Natasha Ritchie, were transported to the nearby hospital.

Ritchie died of her injuries on Sunday morning, and a post-mortem was scheduled for the afternoon.

Four people inside the van were injured in the crash, as was a pedestrian. They were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

SIU spokesperson Frank Phillips told ctvtoronto.ca that five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the collision investigation.

One subject Hamilton police officer has been identified, Phillips said.

The SIU is looking for witnesses, who can contact investigators at 416-622-1898, or 1-800-787-8529, ext. 1898.

The SIU investigates cases of serious injuries or deaths involving police.
