The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a fatal shooting Sunday evening near a fast food chain in North York.

Police say a man in his 20’s was shot behind a Burger King restaurant at the intersection of Keele Street and Wilson Avenue at approximately 9 p.m., after officers were called to the area to make an arrest.

The SIU said an “interaction between police and a man” took place and the man suffered a gunshot wound a short time later.

The unidentified man was taken to Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police cordoned the area around the restaurant’s parking lot following the shooting.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Five investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to probe the circumstances of the shooting.
