The provincial special investigations unit is looking into the cause of a crash that occurred in downtown Toronto following a police pursuit late Tuesday night.

A vehicle rolled onto its side in a parking lot on McCaul Street, just north of Dundas Street West, shortly before midnight.

The crash happened just moments after Toronto police attempted to pull the driver over on Queen Street West.

The driver, believed to be in his 30s, took off northbound on McCaul Street and went through a red light on Dundas before crashing, CP24's Cam Woolley reported. Police have not said why they initially tried to stop the vehicle.

The driver ran away, but was taken into police custody near the scene, suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

Members of the SIU were investigating at the scene of the crash on Wednesday morning.

The Ontario police watchdog investigates all incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegation of sexual assault.
