Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a 30-year-old man was fatally shot by Toronto police officers on Friday night.

The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. outside a residence on Bayview Avenue, south of Steeles Avenue.

In a statement issued Saturday morning, the Ontario Special Investigations Unit said police were involved in a “confrontation” with the man, during which several of the officers discharged their firearms.

The man was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The SIU is an arm’s-length organization that investigates police incidents involving death or injury.
