Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating the death of a man who was in police custody Monday night.

Toronto police responded to a domestic dispute call at a Kipling Avenue apartment building at about 6 p.m. Monday. Officers arrested a 41-year-old man and laid several criminal charges, SIU spokesperson Rose Bliss told CTV.ca.

"He was taken to 23 Division where he was lodged in a cell and at approximately 9:20 p.m.," Bliss said.

When a routine check of the police station cells at occurred later in the evening, the man was found suffering from "medical distress," Bliss said.

Police took the man to Etobicoke General Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 10 p.m.

After the man's death, the SIU launched an investigation. Six SIU investigators have been assigned to the case.

"We're attending the autopsy that's scheduled for today to determine what all the factors were surrounding his death and we've examined the cell block area, we've secured any relevant police reports, notes and tapes and the investigation is continuing," Bliss said.

The man's identity has not been released.
