A police watchdog group is investigating the death of a man who allegedly died at the hands of officers.

The province's Special Investigations Unit was called to midtown Toronto Saturday night after a man in his twenties was shot.

The incident happened at around 8:30 p.m. in Oriole Park, near Yonge Street and Davisville Avenue.

There are reports the man was allegedly involved in a robbery at a local market. Police followed him into Oriole Park.

Witnesses said they heard police yell at a man, asking him to drop his knife. They then heard sounds of gunshots.

"I hear four shots, turn around, and the guy just dropped like a bag of hammers," one witness told the Toronto Star.

Two police officers were wounded in the altercation and are being treated for their injuries.

The SIU is interviewing witnesses. The provincial agency probes cases where police are involved in an incident where civilians are seriously injured or killed.
