Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a man was shot in Toronto's west end Monday night.

Emergency crews were called to an apartment building on Weston Road, south of Highway 401, shortly before 8:30 p.m., where police were investigating a domestic disturbance involving a sword.

A 29-year-old man was shot at least once on Weston Road before fleeing on foot, with police in pursuit. He was eventually struck by a southbound car on Weston Road after an encounter with police near a gas station.

The man was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition after suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. On Tuesday, he was reported to be stabilized and is expected to recover.

Two other people, a man and a woman in their 20s, were also taken to hospital with minor cuts to the head and legs.

Angie Parman, a resident of the apartment building where incident took place, told CTV Toronto she had just finished walking her dog Monday evening when she heard four gunshots, directly underneath her apartment.

SIU seized surveillance video from a Weston Road gas station on Tuesday.

The SIU's mandate is invoked when police are involved in incidents that result in death or serious injury.

It has designated one officer as the subject of its investigation and four officers as witnesses.
