Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was shot during an altercation with police in Oshawa early Wednesday morning.

The victim was being investigated by Durham Regional Police at the time of the incident.

Officers had stationed themselves outside a building the man had entered near King Street East and Charles Street at about 1:20 a.m.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, the man was shot “following an interaction with the police” when he exited the building roughly an hour later.

The man is being treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries, the SIU said.

Six investigators and five forensic investigators are looking into the incident.

Traditionally, the SIU is called in to investigate incidents involving police officers there has been death, serious injuries or allegations of sexual assault.
