The province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate after a man was shot and killed by police in Toronto's west end on Monday.

According to reports, shortly after 10:30 a.m. police responded to a call of at least one person with a weapon on Campbell Avenue in the Landsdowne Avenue and Dupont Road area.

The man was shot at least once in the abdomen and was rushed to St. Michael's Hospital with no vital signs.

The shooting followed reports of a man reportedly jumping fences in the neighbourhood. Police pursued the suspect on foot before the altercation occurred.

"I know that the fellow's behaviour came to the attention of the Toronto Police and for good reasons they followed him and came in contact with him here on Campbell Avenue," SIU investigator Allan Eaton told reporters at the scene.

The incident was witnessed by a number of residents including the wife of Josh Pimentel whose 24-year-old brother Mike, was fatally stabbed in Liberty Village on New Year's Day.

Pimentel said his wife watched a plainclothes police officer shoot a masked man wielding a knife.

"She was shocked and nervous because I just lost my brother," Pimentel told CP24. "Hearing this (occurred) right on my steps, it's hard."

The SIU is called when there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault involving the police.

Earlier this month, police shot and killed Michael Eligon, 29, on Milverton Boulevard in the Coxwell Avenue and Danforth Road area. This followed reports of a suspicious incident involving a man with scissors.
