The province's Special Investigation Unit is looking into the death of a man after he plunged from the 15th floor of an apartment building in Scarborough Monday.

Toronto police said they were called to 140 Adanac Drive, near Eglinton Avenue East and Markham Road, at about 2:19 p.m. with reports that a man and a woman were breaking into a vehicle near the address.

The suspects then went into the apartment building and police arrived at the scene.

A release issued by the SIU Monday evening said police opened the door to the 15th-floor stairwell and a man went through a window and fell to the ground below.

Paramedics were called to the address at about 2:30 p.m.

A man who had fallen from the apartment building was pronounced dead at the scene, paramedics said.

Toronto police are not releasing any further details of the incident at this time.

The Special Investigations Unit, the agency that investigates serious incidents involving police, said it has assigned five investigators to look into the incident.

The SIU is asking anyone who witnessed the event to call the lead investigator at 416-622-2293.

Police closed off the road in both directions between Bellamy Road and Mason Road as they investigated.
