The Hospital for Sick Children broke a record in 2006 by performing 20 heart transplant surgeries on children from across Canada.

The Toronto hospital said it was a record for the number of hearts transplants performed in a year by a Canadian pediatric transplant centre.

Since 1990, when the hospital started the Cardiac Transplant Program, it has performed 191 of the procedures.

In a written statement released Tuesday, the hospital claimed that figure established "SickKids as one of the largest pediatric heart transplant centres in North America."

Doctors at SickKids performed 15 transplants in 2005. The facility averages 10 to 15 transplants each year which translates into about two-thirds of pediatric heart transplants in Canada.

"We have a dedicated multi-disciplinary team that is very focused on improving a child's quality of life so that children can still enjoy being kids after transplant," Dr. Anne Dipchand said in the written statement.

Almost a quarter of the hospital's heart transplant patients are from outside Ontario. SickKids is the only Canadian centre of its kind participating in a North American study that tracks pediatric heart transplant patients.

The transplant program also has a travelling cardiac clinic that visits other programs across Canada once a year for patient follow-up and transplant education.
