One man is dead after being shot in the chest in northwest Toronto Tuesday night.

Officers from 12 Division confirmed that a man was shot on Emmet Avenue, near the intersection of Jane Street and Eglinton Avenue, just before 10 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting occurred near a large soccer field. Police said no one else was injured.

The victim has not been identified but was believed to be in his early 40s.

Police cordoned off the area and interviewed witnesses.

The latest shooting occurred less than 24 hours after two people were killed and 23 others injured when gunfire erupted at a barbecue block party in Scarborough.

The mass shooting prompted renewed calls for tighter gun control and tough measures to curb gang violence.
