Police have arrested two suspects after a man was shot to death Monday night in west end Toronto, but the suspected shooter is still on the loose.

The victim, believed to be in his early 30s, was shot in the head and in the back. He was found on Driftwood Avenue, near Jane Street and Finch Avenue.

When emergency crews arrived, they pronounced him dead on the scene.

Witnesses told police they a white van drive by the victim when one of the three people inside the vehicle opened fire.

Two people were arrested shortly after the man's body was discovered just a few blocks away. Police say they are still searching for a third suspect.

The man is Toronto's 52nd homicide of the year.

"We're concerned about the level of violence that we've seen. It's not one particular neighbourhood or one particular gang. What we're seeing is a lot of retaliatory things, a lot of violence," Police Chief Bill Blair said Tuesday.

Monday nights shooting occurred not far from where three other people were shot Friday night, CTV Toronto's Austin Delaney said Tuesday from Driftwood Court.

People living in the neighbourhood are staying in their homes as police investigate, Delaney said.

Little yellow pyramids mark evidence at the scene. Up to 17 shots are believed to have been fired in the incident.

One woman, who wouldn't appear on camera, said the shooting sounded like firecrackers. She was putting her son to bed and told him to get under the bed instead, fearful a bullet would come through the wall.

Anyone with information is being asked to call 31 Division at 416-808-3100 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
