There were some tense moments in the city's core on Sunday morning after a man was spotted with what looked like a machine gun.

A number of drivers called 911 and reported that a man had jumped into traffic and pointed the fake weapon at vehicles.

Police eventually seized the gun near the Eaton Centre just before noon, and quickly realized that it was a fake.

Staff-Sgt. Craig Lewers, from 52 Division, told ctvtoronto.ca that the incident was a false alarm. The man involved was deemed to be "disturbed," added Lewers.

"I guess the officers took it off of him and secured him," he said.

An earlier report suggested that the man would face charges, but Lewers said that none were likely.
