A 23-year-old woman is dead following a chain of collisions on a Mississauga highway Wednesday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police say the collision occurred on Queen Elizabeth Way just west of Mississauga Road at about 3:45 a.m., when a westbound Lincoln Town Car rear-ended a small vehicle.

Following the collision, the driver of the Lincoln abandoned his vehicle on the highway and ran to the shoulder for safety.

Police say a BMW then collided with the vacant Lincoln before careening across the highway and into a tractor-trailer.

Two occupants inside the BMW were rushed to hospital following the crash.

One victim, a 23-year-old woman from Scarborough, was airlifted to Sunnybrook hospital in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead.

A man in the car also suffered undisclosed injuries.

Sgt. Dave Woodford said the driver of the Lincoln has been charged with careless driving.

OPP crews are still at the scene working to reconstruct the series of events that led to the crash.

The highway reopened later Wednesday morning.
