The skyline of Toronto’s Exhibition Place took on a slightly different look Sunday after a roof was added over the south concourse of BMO Field.

The roof was assembled by crews on site into a single, 445-tonne structure. The 115- by 20-metre canopy was then lifted into place using two cranes, according to PCL Constructors Canada, the company overseeing the project.

Soccer team Toronto FC tweeted about the expansion on Sunday, with photos showing various steps in the process.

The 31,000-seat stadium is home to soccer team Toronto FC and the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. It has hosted a variety of other sporting events since opening in April, 2007.

BMO Field has undergone several expansions since then. Most recently, 8,400 seats were added to the stadium. Now, roofing is being added over all fixed seating.

Once completed, the canopy will cover all of the seats in the east, west and south stands.

The stadium will also be introducing a rigging system for fan displays and a new sound and lighting systems.
