A young girl is dead after being hit and then run over by a car driven by a relative in Brampton on Saturday evening.

Police said the incident happened just after 5 p.m. in the driveway of a home at 64 Hadfield Circle, near Bramalea Road and Countryside Drive.

Fifteen-month-old Sarneet Kaur Takhar was on the way to the park with her family and was put inside a relative's silver BMW.

"She was sitting in the car. We don't know how she came out and went behind the car," said Ravinder Jhajj, a friend of the family.

Neighbours ran outside to help Takhar when she was hit but the girl had no vital signs when emergency crews arrived at the scene.

"The baby was in the mother's hands, I felt really sad," said one neighbour.

The child's mother, a nurse at Etobicoke Gerneral Hospital, fainted several times at the scene. Const. George Tudos told CTV Toronto that the toddler was rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"It's devastating to the whole community," said Const. Tudos.

Takhar's uncle was driving the BMW at the time of the accident and the girl's cousin, Ravini, also sat in the vehicle. Ravini expressed her shock over the death of her cousin.

"She's still here. I can't believe it. I can't," she said.

Takhar would have turned 16-months-old on Sunday and was described as the joy of her parent's lives.

"She was adorable, she always wanted to see my face (saying) ‘Where's Baba? Where's Baba?'" said Ravini.

Police don't expect charges to be laid in this case.
