Extreme cold warning issued for Regina, southeast Sask.

Much of central and southeastern Saskatchewan is now under extreme cold warnings as a cold front makes its way across the province.

The warning, issued just after 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, extends as far north as Nipawin – running down the length of the province to the southeast corner.

Among the affected communities are Regina, Estevan, Weyburn, Wynyard, Melfort, Tisdale and Humboldt.

Wind chills values are expected to drop the temperature to near minus 40 C Sunday night – extending into Monday morning.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), conditions are expected to moderate Monday afternoon.

The weather service encourages residents to dress warmly and in layers as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin when faced with extreme cold conditions.

The wave of warnings follow similar advisories for Saskatoon and Prince Albert earlier on Sunday.

As of 5:30 p.m., those warnings are no longer in effect, while previously reported extreme cold warnings in the far north remain.
