Sunnybrook Hospital hosted a Preemie Picnic on Sunday to reunite caregivers with the families they helped while their babies were in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The picnic took place behind McLean House, located near Bayview and Lawrence Avenues.

Caretaker Sharon Jones said she was excited to see twins she had taken care of for months in the hospital.

The twins’ mother said she was holding back tears of happiness when they were reunited.

The twins weighed just over two pounds when they were delivered. The mother said she credits Jones for helping her family “in the hardest moment of our lives.”

Jones said, “They are beautiful. We did an excellent job.”

Nathalee Ewers was cared for at Sunnybrook in 1996. She said her mother was forced to have an emergency C-section at 30 weeks. But today, Ewers is just a regular 20-year-old.

Ewers said, “I’m walking. I’m talking. They told them I might not hear, might not see or walk. And so here I am. I play sports. I’m doing well, like anyone else. It’s incredible.”
