Counterfeit cash is a growing problem for police as more than a million dollars worth of fake money was found in the Greater Toronto Area in the last two months.
Durham region police have organized free seminars in hopes the public will wise up to the scam.
Retailers in particular are being taught how to spot the counterfeit money. Bills in all denominations have been found on the street and passed on to unsuspecting consumers.
So far their efforts to educate the public are working, police say.
"There have been a number of arrests, mostly from outside Durham region" said Det. John Van Seters, with Durham police' major fraud squad. "There have been some individuals that are local passing the bills."
Police have found counterfeit cash circulating in several businesses, including convenience stores, retail shops and gas stations.
