Toronto police have laid murder charges in connection with the beating of a 60-year-old who has since died from his injuries.

Police were called to a home on Lauder Avenue, near St. Clair Avenue West and Dufferin Street, just after midnight on Sept. 7.

The victim, John Mark Tucker, was taken to hospital for his injuries. It is alleged he was beaten up by his roommate.

Police arrested a 34-year-old suspect at the scene.

Tucker died last Thursday. An autopsy determined the cause of death to be "blunt force chest trauma resulting in haematoma of the spleen," police said.

David Caravaggio was originally charged with assault. Police upgraded his charge on Sunday to second-degree murder.

Caravaggio is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 28.

Tucker is the city's 58th homicide victim of the year.
