Police say it's a miracle a man wasn't killed when his Honda Civic ended up being dragged and crushed beneath a tractor-trailer on Highway 401 on Thursday afternoon.

The collision forced the closure of all eastbound express lanes near Leslie Street and caused extensive backups in both directions for hours.

The 21-year-old driver of the vehicle was trapped beneath the flatbed trailer for nearly 90 minutes before emergency workers were able to extricate him.

Police said the man suffered a broken leg. He was airlifted to hospital.

"It's incredible that he didn't sustain more injuries than he looked like he did," said one emergency worker.

The driver of the transport was not hurt in the noon hour crash.

OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley called it a "fantastic rescue."

Police believe the accident was triggered when the Civic was bumped from behind by another vehicle.

The investigation is continuing.
