A naked man was rescued from the edge of a hydro canal in the Niagara Region on Sunday.

Niagara police spent about two hours trying to lift the man to safety using ropes and harnesses. He was not wearing any clothes.

The man was stranded some hundred feet down the sheer side of the canal, police said. A passerby heard him call for help just before noon. Police, fire crews and paramedics rushed to the scene.

The man is being treated for severe hypothermia.
