Toronto police say an inmate has died at the Don Jail, making this the second death of an inmate in less than two months.

"There has been a death in there. It's under investigation," Toronto Police Staff Sgt. Jim MacKrell told ctvtoronto.ca.

Police were called to the jail near Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street sometime Saturday afternoon.

MacKrell would not reveal the name or age of the victim, and said police are not revealing any circumstances surrounding the death at this time.

"The investigation will unfold, but it will unfold slowly," MacKrell said.

This is the third incident and second death of an inmate at the jail in less than two months.

Inmate Jeff Munro, 32, died at the jail on Nov. 6, allegedly beaten over a stolen bag of potato chips. The incident occurred in a part of the jail that has no surveillance cameras. Three men have been charged with first-degree murder in his death.

On Nov. 11, inmate Kevin Pereira was rushed to hospital after being allegedly assaulted by another prisoner who has since been charged.

The Don Jail holds short-term prisoners who are generally awaiting trial or sentencing.
