A Toronto police officer and two dogs walked away from a car accident Tuesday, when a silver Land Rover smashed into their cruiser as they rushed towards a shooting.

The cruiser spun out of control and landed on top of a beige van, the rear of the vehicle pointing skyward. The two dogs were trapped inside the vehicle but firefighters managed to free them.

The accident happened at the intersection of Victoria Park Avenue and Curlew Drive.

Police say two men fired several shots into a crowd of people standing outside an east-end housing complex, before running from the scene.

Shortly after the incident, a man checked himself into North York General Hospital with a gunshot wound. But it's unclear whether that injury is connected to the shooting.

Police described the two suspects as young black males wearing dark clothing. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
