A two-year-old boy has died after he fell into a pond behind a home in Scarborough late Tuesday morning, and a homeowner is facing charges in connection to the death.
Toronto police said the toddler was not breathing when he was found in a small backyard pond on Carrying Place, a cul-de-sac near Tapscott Road and Finch Avenue, at about 10:30 a.m.
Paramedics performed CPR on the child and rushed him to Sick Kids hospital.
They were not able to revive him and the boy was pronounced dead around 2:30 p.m.
Neighbours told CTV Toronto's Austin Delaney that the family launched a frantic search after the child went missing and eventually found him lying in a small pond behind the house next door.
That yard had no gate, neighbours said.
Police said the homeowner at 21 Carrying Place is facing a charge of criminal negligence causing death.
Police placed yellow crime scene tape around the home as they investigated.
They pulled it down shortly after 3 p.m.
