Toronto police have identified the victim in a fatal west-end shooting Thursday afternoon.
Delano Coombs, 27, died after being shot multiple times as he drove down an alley in the Dundas Street West and Scarlett Road area, police said on Friday.
Police said that a number of witnesses to the brazen daylight shooting have provided officers with information, but are appealing for more to come forward.
Witnesses at the scene told CTV Toronto that a man wearing a blue hoodie fired shots at a vehicle as it was travelling through a laneway between rows of townhouses.
Bill Baxter, who is staying in one of the nearby townhouses with friends, said the vehicle crashed into a pole. Bullet holes were visible in the windshield of that vehicle.
The man had been shot in the chest and face, he said.
The victim was taken to hospital and pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.
The area where the shooting occurred is near a playground and daycare, and also an area where school buses drop kids off after school.
This isn't the first fatal shooting in the area.
In May 2009, 18-year-old Jarvis St. Remy was shot and killed while he was waiting for a bus on Dundas Street West near Scarlett Road.
St. Remy didn't have gang ties and his shooting was thought to be a case of mistaken identity.
Also in May 2009, Adrian Johnson, 14, was shot just blocks away from where St. Remy died. His body was found near hydro lines at Scarlett Road and Eileen Avenue.
